Venue Assignments for the LA28 Olympic and Paralympic Games

The LA28 Olympic and Paralympic Games publicly announced the venue assignments for more than a dozen Olympic sports. The locations are spread over Los Angeles, Carson, and Long Beach to emphasize & showcase the popular, multifaceted communities in the region. According to LA28 Chief Athlete Officer Janet Evans, the Games have a vision to project the best of the Los Angeles region, with the City of Los Angeles hosting the most competitions and Carson and Long Beach set to host more than ever before. The venues selected in these three cities are world-class and will provide excellent conditions for athletes and fans alike.

As stated, most of the Olympic action will be based in Los Angeles proper and is due to host ten disciplines. The venues include the USC Sports Center, which will be the site for Badminton, and the Convention Center, used as the Main Press Center during the 1984 Games, and will host Fencing, Judo, Table Tennis, Taekwondo, and Wrestling in 2028. Weightlifting will take place at the Los Angeles Theatre in Downtown, while the golf competitions will be held at The Riviera Country Club of Pacific Palisades. These grand venue assignments mirror what spectators hope will be high-quality events in 2028.

Exciting Developments in Carson and Long Beach

One major development is that Carson plans to refurbish the LA Galaxy’s sports complex to host a variety of Olympic events. The Velodrome will be the venue for Cycling-Track as it is an Official U.S. Olympic Training Site, and the side fields will be transformed into a world-class venue for Hockey. The stadium will serve as a venue for the Rugby Sevens, while tennis competitions will be held at the planned tennis center. The renovation will help to better the structure and facilities, thus bringing in larger groups of visiting Olympic sports lovers.

In addition, Long Beach will be readying itself to also host some key events. The events in Canoe-Sprint and Rowing will be based at the Marine Stadium, a change of plan from the original host venue at Lake Perris in Riverside County. The Arena will host the Handball and Sailing competition on Belmont Shore. Events in Marathon Swimming and Triathlon are to take place along the Alamitos Beach Waterfront, with a temporary aquatics center set up in the Convention Center lot for Water Polo and Artistic Swimming. The beautiful waterfront of Long Beach, with its active community, will provide a scenic and dynamic backdrop for these activities.

These venue changes have been revised from the 2017 Bid Plan and will replace the original placements. The modifications have all been ratified by the International Olympic Committee Executive Board and their respective International Federations. Proposals to move various competitions outside the city are being voted on by the Los Angeles City Council. This comprehensive approach will make the LA28 Games a truly special and unique event for athletes, spectators, and the global audience—ensuring the games will be an inclusive, innovative, and memorable experience for all.
